Local Food Experiences Around Alibag: Konkani Cuisine and What to Eat

By Sachu's Resort  ·  Food & Travel

Food is one of the best reasons to visit the Konkan coast. The cuisine here is distinct — deeply coastal, fish-forward, and shaped by generations of cooking with fresh ingredients from the sea. Alibag sits squarely in Konkan territory, and eating well here doesn't require a fancy restaurant.

What Is Konkani Food?

Konkani cuisine covers the coastal strip from Goa through coastal Maharashtra. In the Alibag region, it's defined by fresh seafood, coconut-based curries, and a balance of spice and tang from kokum, tamarind and fresh chillies. The best version is home-style — not restaurant-elaborate, but deeply flavourful.

What to Eat in Alibag

Fish curry and rice — the backbone of the local diet. Coconut milk-based, mildly spiced, packed with fresh fish. Pomfret, surmai and rawas are most common.

Prawn dishes — Alibag prawns are excellent. Prawn curry, fried prawns and prawn masala are all worth ordering.

Crab — Konkan coast crabs are sweet and full of flavour. Crab masala is a local favourite.

Bombil (Bombay Duck) — a local fish often served fried and crispy. Don't let the name put you off.

Sol kadhi — a cold drink made from kokum and coconut milk. Cooling, slightly tangy, the standard end to a Konkani meal.

Vegetarian options — coconut-based vegetable dishes, dal, rice, chapati and local bhakri. Not only about seafood, though it dominates.
